Listings for our Support Women Artists Now/SWAN Calendar have been pouring in this week. Thanks to all of you who have submitted.  We are thrilled by your power and diversity!

We have described a few events below from Berkeley, Chicago, and New York.  We hope they will encourage you to check out all the other terrific events on the SWAN Calendar and post your own!


Golden_ThreadBERKELEY, CA – Golden Thread Productions celebrates the work of 5 pioneering Middle Eastern American women artists this Saturday, March 12 at La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley, CA.

Golden Thread’s founding artistic director, Torange Yeghiazarian, will be in conversation with Taraneh Hemami (Iranian visual artist/curator), Nabila Mango (founding executive director of the Arab arts organization, Zawaya), Betty Shamieh (award-winning playwright), and Sharlyn Sawyer (founding artistic director of Ballet Afsaneh, a company that focuses on Central Asian dance).

The presentations will include a reading from Shamieh’s newest play The Strangest and a 30-minute concert by Aswat Women’s Ensemble, the Bay Area’s only exclusively-female Arab music ensemble, featuring songs from the queens of Arabic music, Asmahan, Fairouz, Shadia, and Dalida. For more information, please visit Golden Thread’s website>>.

NEW YORK, NY – The H.E.A.T Collective will present a free marathon staged reading of The Emma Goldman Trilogy, three plays by Jessica Litwak, as part of a day of festivities commemorating the life and work of the in/famous anarchist Emma Goldman (1869-1940) this Saturday, March 12 from 2 p.m.-10 p.m. at New York’s Theater Lab.

The plays cover 4 decades of Goldman’s life. A 3-course meal and guided discussions are included. Read more>>

 


bechtol-275wtCHICAGO, IL – The Art Colony of Lost Artists of Chicago will celebrate SWAN Day with a special event featuring women artists living and working in Chicago who are known for their unique and passionate styles this Saturday, March 12 from 5 – 9 p.m. There will be an exhibit of artworks by Laura Slota (visual artist) and Nancy Bechtol (artist, Photographer/APA photojournalist, and independent filmmaker). NEW YORK, NYWomen in Art is an international exhibition of modern and contemporary visual arts organized by Leda Maria and The Ward-Nasse Gallery and Museum in New York. This ninth annual Women in Art exhibit at Ward Nasse Gallery will feature 30 women artists coming from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Finland, Poland, Portugal and the United States.
