Society for the Arts in Healthcare Call for Films (April 30, 2010, Minneapolis, MN) – Screening will take place as part of the annual Arts in Healthcare conference; a half hour segment of the winning film will be aired on the weekly cable TV program, A Public Health Journal. Primary applicant must hold a current Society for the Arts in Healthcare membership. The festival will feature 3-5 minute short extracts of films that deal with the arts in healthcare. One entry per person. Submit entry form (available on website) with four DVD copies of the full-length film. Designate the most powerful 3-5 minute excerpt that illustrates the importance of the arts in healthcare by noting the excerpt’s start and stop time in the entry form. NO FEE. Big Muddy Film Festival (February 19-28, 2010, Carbondale, IL) – Celebrates the work of innovative independent film and video artists, and encourages grassroots film-making in local communities. This year’s festival will feature a special LGBTQ themed sidebar, so they are particularly seeking work in any genre or style featuring queer themes or subjects. In addition, an award will be given to a film that addresses peace, justice, community action, and environmental issues. **Women of African Descent Film Festival** (May 1, 2010, Brooklyn, NY) – Seeks to showcase films centered around the them of Linkages: Women, Their Families, Neighborhoods, and the Global Community, and to support the artistic development of women filmmakers of African Descent by providing a supportive exhibition platform, offering stipends to participants, and seeking industry opportunities that will help to expose the filmmakers' works and further their careers. This festival commemorates the 50th anniversary of The Brooklyn Chapter of The Links, Inc., an organization of African American professional women dedicated to the support of educational, civic, and cultural activities in Brooklyn. Spirit Quest Film Festival (May 7-9, 2010, Edinboro, PA) – Created and maintained by film festival veterans with deep ties within the industry, the Spirit Quest Film Festival was founded in order to bring thought provoking, entertaining and uplifting works of cinema to audiences as well as to provide submitting filmmakers and screenwriters with exposure and attention. Seeking submissions from filmmakers from around the world with themes ranging from “day to day relationships, to matters of the soul and spirituality, to racism, poverty, injustice, environmental concerns and everything in between.” Films celebrating diversity are particularly encouraged, though they are interested in anything that explores the human experience in a moving, thought-provoking way. Group Exhibition: Profiling: Exploring the Faces of Diversity within the Jewish Community (April 8-18, 2010, Minneapolis, MN) – Seeking films as part of a group exhibition that will include all visual art forms, as well as readings of poetry and prose. The exhibit will be held at the Tychman Shapiro Gallery at the Sabes Jewish Community Center; films will be screened for the opening, as well as during the upcoming Minneapolis Jewish Film Festival. Films should deal with the subject of diversity within the Jewish community. The Creative Work Fund – Grants of $10,000-$40,000 for projects by San Francisco Bay Area artists and organizations. Southern Exposure’s Alternative Exposure – Seeks to fuel the energy of the San Francisco Bay Area visual arts community by providing direct support to projects that contribute to their communities and provide frameworks of support for artists to create and continue their work. Grants of up to $3,500 to support the work of unincorporated groups of artists or individual artists, burgeoning art venues and gathering spaces, publications, collectives, and events, to promote the making and presenting of work in a committed but informal way. Projects can include an exhibition or exhibition series, a public art project, a one-time event or performance, the ongoing work of a venue or collective, the publication of writing directly related to the visual arts, an online project or publication, an artist residency, a series of screenings, and more. The resulting project should be accessible and presented to the public. They encourage projects that present the work of more than one artist; if applying as a group, it can be long-standing or created specifically for this project. The San Francisco Foundation Bay Area Documentary Fund – Awards ranging from $20,000-$25,000 to support documentary projects in early production phases by experienced filmmakers with an esteemed body of previously created work. **Women’s Film Preservation Fund Grants** – Accepting proposals for the preservation or restoration of American films, from any era, in which women have held significant positions, including, but not limited to, writer, director, producer, editor and performer. The WFPF presents these restored films publicly as a way to increase awareness of women’s contributions to film history. Individuals and nonprofit organizations may apply. Films may be of any length, on any subject matter, and in any format or base. Grants of up to $10,000, to be used for actual costs connected with restoration/preservation, not salaries or general administrative costs. UK Film Council Short Film Completion Fund - Provides finance and support for short films that show outstanding potential but lack the funds to finish. Cinereach – Grants from $5,000-$50,000 for feature and documentary films in all stages of production by emerging and established filmmakers. Grants are awarded to well-crafted films that depict underrepresented perspectives, resonate across international boundaries, and spark dialogue. Engage 2020 Innovation Grant Program for Philadelphia Arts Organizations – New grantmaking initiative designed to stimulate cultural engagement in the Philadelphia region. Chosen organizations will receive funding (up to $75,000) to design and implement programs that focus on innovation in product development, audience experience, marketing and communications, or new market development, toward the long-term goal of doubling cultural participation in the Greater Philadelphia area by 2020. Applicant organizations must have 501(c)(3) status, be located in the Greater Philadelphia region (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties), present artistic programs as the primary focus of their mission, have completed three full seasons of professional artistic programming for public audiences, and employ full-time paid professional staff. International Emerging Documentary Filmmakers Fellowship at the Documentary Center of The George Washington University (May 26-July 8, 2010, Washington, DC) – Intensive 6-week program that will include 20 emerging documentary filmmakers from across the globe. Fellows will work together in a collaborative environment geared toward launching their work onto the world stage. Applications are invited from countries around the world where traditional infrastructure for the creation and distribution of documentary does not currently exist. Fellows will make 2 films, participate in round-table discussions with notable U.S. filmmakers, and meet representative from major broadcast networks. Fellows will also attend Silverdocs: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival and conference in June, with an opportunity to engage with middle and high school teachers with the goal of integrating the work of fellows into classrooms around the U.S. Fellowships provides international travel, travel costs for procurement of a U.S. visa, accommodations, daily food stipend, domestic U.S. travel, equipment, materials costs, registration, and tuition fees. VSA Arts / MetLife Foundation's Arts Connect All Grant Program – Grants of up to $15,000 in support of arts institutions whose programs incorporate the following: inclusive teaching practices; access to students with all types of disabilities; development of social, cognitive, and artistic skills; involvement of people with disabilities in planning and implementation; building staff, teacher, and/or artist knowledge and skill of inclusive practices; and collaborations with public schools that engage students, parents, and school administrators. Pacific Pioneer Fund – Supports emerging documentary filmmakers and videographers who live and work in California, Oregon, and Washington with grants of $1,000 - $10,000. Filmmakers must demonstrate a commitment to the art of making documentaries by several year (but no more than 10) of practical film or video experience. Preference will be given to projects that provide filmmakers with good exposure. Applicants must have fiscal sponsorship from a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. San Francisco Film Society FilmHouse Residencies at Pier 27 (beginning March 2010, San Francisco, CA) – 6-month residencies designed to bring together under one roof an eclectic mix of San Francisco filmmakers in various stages of production for mutual encouragement and support. Applicants must be SFFS members at the Filmmaker Pro level or above; be at least 18 years old; be actively engaged in a film, video, television or other moving-image project in any genre and in any stage of production—from screenwriting to strategizing the project’s exhibition, distribution and outreach plan. The filmmaker or project must have a significant connection to San Francisco; either the filmmaker is a San Francisco resident, or the project is shooting in San Francisco or involves San Francisco in a meaningful way at one or more stages of production. Projects must be noncommercial and represent an imaginative contribution to the moving image art form. Priority will be given to projects that demonstrate viable financial support and promise a high likelihood of being brought to completion. Priority will also be given to San Francisco residents.
