Current Work I explore peoples and cultures who are constantly at risk, people who are continuously fighting for their survival. My artwork confronts the struggles and questions of human existence and history while juxtaposing them with the circle of life and the trust of a Higher Power that provides universal hope, optimism, spiritual light, and strength.
My work consists of colorful, provocative mixed media paintings that intermingle universal symbolism, hebrew language, collage elements, the ambiguities of life’s lessons, and the elements of human creation and celebration.
In 1997, I visited Eastern Europe and Israel, where I first experienced the depths of the European Jewish reality of struggle and survival. I also felt, firsthand, the atrocities of the Holocaust, as I visited concentration camps and looked darkness in the eye. I inhaled human ash and felt the constraints of barbed wire surrounding me.
Immediately after, I tasted the ambition, spirituality, and strength of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel. Arriving in Israel, I experienced a deep contrast in the spiritual homeland of endless strength, continuity, and thousands of years of human history. Hope, optimism, and freedom pulsed through the air, and the strength of a Higher Power surrounded me.
My artistic journey continuously elevated while living in Israel during 1999 and 2000 in the Negev desert. My work continues to confront the questions of, “How do we best celebrate life? What is memory? How do we remember the connections to our past? How can we best celebrate and express the beauty of our collective human experience?”
Nobel Peace Laureate Elie Wiesel recently reviewed my work and said, “Rebecca’s artwork shows a rare sensitivity to fundamental issues of human concern which she aptly expresses in her artwork.” |
