Personal Statement: An Algerian playwright writing in French, Fatima Gallaire has written over twenty plays, translated in more than ten languages and performed in countries all over the world, including the USA, Great Britain, Italy, Uzbekistan, and Morocco.

Her main plays in English are:

  • "Princesses", translated as "You have come back" by Jill McDougall, published in "Plays by Women" (F.Kourilsky editor)

  • "Les Co-épouses", translated by T&C Shread as "House of Wives"

  • "Témoignage contre un homme stérile", translated as "Madam Bertin's Testimony", published in "Monologues" (F. Kourilsky editor)

  • "Des Cailloux pour la Soif", a radio play commissioned by BBC4, translated as "Pebbles for your Thirst"

    She has also written many short stories, and novels for children.

  • Current Work
    Gallaire continues to write dramas, with a tendency toward political and historic subjects such as the Algerian war, but occasionally she writes on lighter subjects and creates total comedies.

    She also recently began a familial saga meant to fill up several novels.
    Short Bio
    Fatima Gallaire was born in 1944 in a small Algerian town. She studied literature in Algeria and cinema in Paris. She worked for the National Film Center in Algeria and directed a few documentary movies.

    She now lives and works in France.
