Current Work Currently I am working on a follow up book to my first book which was called "Laws of the Bandit Queens". That book was a celebration of women I felt were revolutionary and inspirational.
My next project is about varied definitions of family.
I recently completed my first film work in the form of a music video that will be commercially released in 2004, and a television commercial. |
Short Bio Ali Smith has toured the world as a musician and photographer for over a decade, documenting bands and life on the road. She still shoots bands for record labels and magazines, but more recently she has done a lot of editorial portraiture and book covers.
The musicians she has photographed include: The White Stripes, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Donnas, Superchunk, Lydia Lunch, Exene Cervenka, Peter Murphy.
Her work has appeared in Rolling Stone, SPIN, Guitar Player, Time Out New York, Cosmopolitan, New York Magazine, and she has shot for Maveric Records and MCA Records among many others.
Her editorial portraiture includes shots of a diverse group of popular icons like Janeane Garofalo, Sandra Bernhard, Weird Al Yankovic and former presidential hopeful Geraldine Ferraro.
Her aesthetic has been successfully applied to many advertising campaigns including ones for Blue Man Group, Jordache Jeans, Cosmopolitan Magazine and Sandra Bernhard's recent A&E talk show.
Her book of photography, Laws of the Bandit Queens, was released by Random House in April 2002. It has been referred to as "this generation's quintessential homage to the numerous strong, smart, groundbreaking women whose actions have helped bring about positive change and revolution in thought."
She has developed a strong interest in issues of parenting and family, especially since she recently became a step-mother to a wonderful (now) 11 year old girl.

Honors I was honored to have Random House decide to release my first major book of photography last year. Currently I'm working as an art director at a major publishing house. |
