Mission Statement: Venus Theatre is a 501(c)(3) non-profit women’s theatre company dedicated to setting flight to the voices of women.

This means that, as a company, we strive to perform plays by women playwrights, employ talented, hard-working women as actors, directors, designers, technicians, etc, and address issues that are important to women through our productions.

Located in a male dominated city (Washington, DC) and male dominated field, Venus Theatre was created to educate the public, both youth and adult, about historical and contemporary women’s issues, as well as to build a nurturing community in which women artists can thrive.

Current Work
Venus commits to mounting two plays a year eligible for Helen Hayes awards along with a tour. Venus' programs include: Women On Stilts Interactive Improvisations Workshops, the wRighting Women Reading Series, VenusYouthReach, as well as mainstage...VENUSENVY.
History
Venus Theatre began as an all female interactive improvisation troupe called Venus Envy. The troupe performed at the House of Ruth (a homeless shelter for women) utilizing a lot of the talent of the female performer's in Comedy Sportz. The Writers Corp. was a collaborative effort at the House of Ruth to use acting around objects as the catalyst for story telling.

Venus went on to lead Take Back the Night marches, as well as making other campus appearances as an outreach program for women.

Since that time, Venus has begun exploring the written word. Observing a strong demand for diverse female roles coupled with a large talent pool of female actors, Venus decided to leave the 'envy' behind and transformed her mission to SETTING FLIGHT TO THE VOICES OF WOMEN.

Venus Theatre has now attained not-for-profit status and currently seeks a safe-home space for her performances.

Venus was officially founded in 2000. In 2003, Venus Theatre gave voice to 60 female characters on the Washington stage. Venus did this through several different initiatives: MAINSTAGE Productions, wRighting Women Reading Series, and VenusYouthReach. In addition to these programs, Venus has launched Women On Stilts Interactive Improv Workshops.
