Personal Statement: I write on two fronts: as a playwright and soap opera critic. I like to think of my 10-minute plays as Legos: each can stand alone, but can also be put together in various combinations. In all of my plays, nothing really happens as the characters simply talk, but at the end of ten minutes, everything about their relationship has changed.

I'm a lifelong fan of soap operas. I began writing about soaps in the early-1990s, my premise being that soaps should be taken as seriously as any other form of popular culture.

But being a fan doesn't preclude criticism and analysis. My essay, "The Ironic and Convoluted relationship between Daytime and Primetime Soap Operas," will be published next year in the anthology "The Survival of the Soap Opera; Strategies for the New Media Era" (University Press of Mississippi).

Current Work
I currently post soap opera commentary on my blog at Red Room. Future plans include publishing a collection of the Red Room essays and a documentary film on the life of Irna Phillips, who created the soap opera.

There are two plays in the back of my mind that will eventually move to the front and demand to be written.
Short Bio
After graduating from Harvard University in 1983 with an undergraduate degree in humanities, I began writing about nursing. My articles appeared in The Boston Globe, Revolution: The Journal for Nurse Empowerment, and Soap Opera Weekly, where I published a piece on how nurses are portrayed on soap operas and then shifted my focus to writing about soaps. My 1996 demographic analysis of the demographics of soap opera viewers has been cited in several scholarly articles.

From 2005-2007, I advised a Master's thesis project on soap opera in the Comparative Media Studies (CMS) program at MIT. My critical observations on soap opera appear on several soap boards and media blogs. In 2008, I guest-lectured at a CMS class, The American Soap Opera.

Last March (2008), my 10-minute play, 50 and Counting, was performed at the Boston Playwrights Theatre as part of the second annual SWAN Day celebrations. In 2007, my one-act play, Settling In, was broadcast on Somerville Community Access Television. Other short plays have been performed in greater Boston, New York and Los Angeles. I’ve also completed a screenplay, Never Can Say Goodbye, and the treatment for a second, The Good Father.
