Personal Statement: Through writing and music, I seek to create the world in which I would like to live. I write fiction and creative non-fiction dealing primarily with the theme of self-identity in relation to the physical body, gender and culture. I seek to question accepted conceptions of health, illness, and disability within the broader metaphoric context of contemporary culture, often challenging traditional narrative structures in order to subvert the "acceptable" stories women (in particular) are permitted to tell about their bodies and their lives. In my work, I attempt to identify and challenge limitations, whether they be physical, social, political, or linguistic.
As a singer, I am interested in vocal harmonies and odd time rhythms.

Current Work
I am currently working on a non-linear novel that explores disability through metaphor, provisionally titled Restless Before Migration. See my website for excerpts and news.
I sing in the band Backlit, a San Francisco-based keyboard/drums/vocals trio writing songs that explore the frontiers of harmony and rhythm while maintaining a strong lyric and melodic base. We just released a 5-song EP that can be downloaded for free at: www.soundcloud.com/backlitsanfrancisco.
I also sing in the Alto 2 section of Conspiracy of Venus, a San Francisco women's alt-choir: http://conspiracyofvenus.com/.
Short Bio
I hold a B.A. in Creative Writing and Literature from Bard College (2000) and an M.A. in English Literature from the University of Bordeaux, France (2005).
From 2000 - 2007 I lived in Bordeaux, France, where I fronted a folk band under the name Deborah (www.soundcloud.com/deborahsteinberg). I released two albums: Lines (Odette Productions, 2004), and Iconography of the Outlaw (Odette Productions, 2007), and toured in France, England and Spain. I also sang backup for French singers Jon Smith and Madi and the art-rock band Dollars.
From 2003 - 2007, I was a founding member and chair of the Bordeaux Anglophone Writer's Workshop.
I have had work published in Ms. Guided 'Zine, sPARKLE & bLINK, and on The Rumpus.
From 2003-2008, I was the editor in chief and events organizer for Louis Liard Magazine.
I currently serve as Director of Artist Services for WomenArts.
