Current Work Due to the trauma I experienced on 9/11, I began having difficulty painting. I was unable to focus for long periods of time. To remain creative I decided to explore a new medium, Polaroid SX-70 Manipulation or "emulsion painting". This process combines two of my favorite disciplines; painting and photography. Using an antique camera and polaroid film, I wander the city streets and capture images that reflect what I love most about my city. While the picture is developing, I manipulate it's emulsion thus creating a palm-sized painting. I then enlarge these images and print them on 30" x 30" canvas. The resulting works are difficult to categorize as they are both painting and photograph. Exploring this new medium has enabled me to shift my focus. It helps me not to dwell on the devastation outside my door. Instead it encourages me to focus on the things I love most about my city. The result of this exploration was not only a more positive outlook, but a new body of work. |
