Mission Statement: 5 Centuries (5Cs) does participatory theatre work to reach the hearts of people, where real change manifests itself. 5Cs works with communities to find out what problems they face, be it insecurity, police harrassment, water and sanitation problems, lack of dispensaries and health care services, etc., and then we rehearse plays that are specific to that area. During the performances, members of the community are invited to ask questions or even join the cast on stage. Community members feel honoured when they see one of their own on stage with a group of progressive women, addressing their own issues in the form of a play. Our goal is to convince communities that unless they empower their own women, they will remain in the "wilderness."

Current Work
The 5Cs is currently seeking for funds for our campaigns to address the issues of women and work, migration, and violence against women. The project has already started, but it is dependent on other women's rights organizations.

All of 5Cs' work is through participatory theatre, revolving around normal issues that hold a larger social and political significance in the society.

For further insight into issues relating to women, freedom of expression, and theatre in Africa, read Sophie D. Ogutu’s report for Britain’s Article 19 at www.article19.org/pdfs/publications/gender-women-s-voices.pdf.
History
5Cs is an acronym of 5 centuries of colonialism, neo-colonialism, and post-colonialism in Africa. It's a CBO with a mandate is to empower indegenous and local women's capacity for advocacy through participatory theatre. 5Cs also addresses social issues affecting people in the communities.
