Current Work "The Sky is Still Overcast," May 2006
Presented by Los Angeles's Barnsdall Gallery Theatre and Sri Susilowati. In this evening of dance with original choreography, spoken word and poetry, and new musical composition, Susilowati and Sri Dance Company reflect on the themes of breast cancer, death, and children growing up in a dump.
The evening's first work, "Love’s All Worshipped Tomb," explores the emotions and feelings surrounding the experience of breast cancer. Whereas on the one hand breasts give women their early sexual identity, for those who have breast cancer they can also be a source of travail. "Deal" recounts the story from the Mahabharata in which Sawitri and Death bargain over her husband’s life. This adaptation of the well-known story explores love, sacrifice, and the nature of friendship. "Lucky" (if the fruit is sweet, but if it’s bitter, what then?) is a meditation on children growing up in a dump, learning to love life despite its challenges. |
Short Bio Sri Susilowati is the producer of Dancing in the Margins Festival and Director of Sri Dance Company. The LA Times has called Sri's work "an artful exploration on how East fits into West" (Segal, March 13, 2004). Sri has been the recipient of many fellowships and distinctions, including 2005-2006 City of Los Angeles Artist-in-Residence (AIR) and COLA grants, the Alma Hawkins Choreographic Award, nomination for the 2004 Lester Horton Award, and finalist status for the 2002 National American College Dance Festival at the Kennedy Center.
Sri is a graduate of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Yogyakarta and has an MFA from the Department of World Arts and Cultures at UCLA. She teaches at Santa Monica College.
