Mission Statement: SUN TV uses television to serve the growth and cultural esteem of Caribbean people, especially women and children. Through creative processes that are organic in approach and sometimes in style, SUN TV aims to be universal by finding what is Caribbean-specific - without translation, apology, or compromise. This continues to be our mission ten years after pioneering the first local community television through the use of a cable operator's "Barker Channel." SUN TV is, as one journalist put it, "Adamantly local programming...a guerilla video version of 'Hogan's Heroes' creating roots programming behind enemy lines." (Mark Lyndersay, Trinidad Express)

Current Work
Recently completed:

The Journey Now Start – 90-minute documentary of the smallest nation ever to qualify for the FIFA World Cup (Germany 2006). Features an all- Trinidad & Tobago soundtrack, digital video, and all-local production. Condenses almost 100 hours shot over two years - in locker and hotel rooms, on planes, and on the track. Our country’s president, prime minster, local media, and sport’s personalities move in and out of the story line with familiar ease. The colloquial title, a 1980s Calypso classic, sings of a developing country already rich in First World victories bold-facedly declaring: Be expectant!...The Journey Now Start.

In development:

Wars, Bras, Because - Concerning woman as mother country - no more Mother Africa, Mother India; no more colonial Queen Mother. The true land of milk and honey is in woman coming home to herself, resuming her rightful place as queen of her own life.

Untitled - Exploring the universality of our small island brand of racism. A pet vulture, (“corbeau” in Trinidad) and a children’s book, “Grommit the Vulture,” issue an invitation for frank discussion.
History
SUN TV television producer Joanne Johnson is also an editor and published children’s author (Macmillan; www.caribbeanchildren.com). She serves as Regional Advisor to the U.S.-based Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and she is a contributing editor to the internationally distributed SHE Caribbean magazine.

SUN TV's roots can be traced to 1992-93 and AVM Television, now NCC 4, which produced 2 daily shows (1 live), a weekly program, and a number of specials and documentaries. In 1994, Joanne co-created Caribbean Sports Digest for senior sports and news anchor Tony Harford.

In 1996, Joanne pioneered Caribbean local community TV by securing a cable operator’s "Barker Channel" and demonstrating the practical possibilities. SUN TV was revolutionary for a culture frustrated by technology used primarily for broadcasting foreign content, government propaganda, and corporate advertising.

With mostly volunteer crew and domestic equipment, SUN TV produced its “Organic Television” - over 700 hours of community arts/entertainment TV - for 2 years without commercial support. The now-defunct, state-owned TTT eventually broadcast SUN TV reruns to increase their quota of local programming.
