Personal Statement: Louise Steinman is the author of THE SOUVENIR: A Daughter Discovers Her Father’s War (“an intimate and powerful story of the effects of war”--James Bradley), awarded the ForeWord Magazine Gold Medal in Autobiography/Memoir. Her work frequently addresses issues of memory, history and reconciliation. She lectures frequently on college campuses on issues related to the legacy of war.

Current Work
"Into the Crooked Mirror: My Conversation with Poland," nonfiction book exploring contemporary reconciliation between Jews and Poles.
Short Bio
Steinman’s essays and features appear frequently in The Los Angeles Times and L.A. Weekly and have also appeared in Los Angeles Magazine; The Los Angeles Times Magazine; New York Times Syndicate; Washington Post; Salon.com; Zyzzyva: West Coast Writers and Artists; and Brick (Toronto) among others.

For the past decade she has curated public programs for the Los Angeles Public Library, including the popular ALOUD at Central Library series (www.aloudla.org).

Steinman is also the author of THE KNOWING BODY: The Artist as Storyteller in Contemporary Performance (“A dazzling and deeply impressive study of the performing arts.” - L.A. Times). From 1976-1986 she created performances and dance/theater works for her interdisciplinary company SO&SO&SO&SO (co-founded with Susan Banyas).

She studied and performed theater and dance with Meredith Monk, Ping Chong, Spalding Gray, Lanny Harrison and Barbara Dilley. She has an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from San Francisco State University, and a B.A. in Literature from Reed College in Portland, Oregon. From 1999-2003 she was Senior Creative Advisor for the Sundance Institute’s Arts Writing Program.
