Current Work My current project is "Faces In the Crowd," a multi-faceted project begun with the creation of an interactive sculpture. A mirror is flanked by pop-up books which depict photographs of groups of individuals who have something in common: race, gender, age, body size, clothing, etc. Viewers are asked to look through photographic masks to see themselves in the mirror as a different person facing the different crowds of people in the pop-up books.
This project enables the viewer to "access" the experience of different individuals in different social situations. The individual viewer also gains access to his or her root beliefs, attitudes, and thinking patterns, in a unique and powerful way. |
Short Bio Valerie Walawender has had her interactive sculpture, "Faces In the Crowd," presented throughout the United States, South America, and Europe. The program that Ms. Walawender has developed from her sculpture has been endorsed by Arun Gandhi, grandson of M.K. Gandhi and founder of the Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence, as "one of the best diverstiy, violence prevention programs in the country."
Ms. Walawender's background includes work as a muralist, an exhibit specialist for two zoos, graphic artist, art college instructor, advertising designer, documentary photographer, writer and more.
