Personal Statement: The premise underlying my conceptual work is what I call "issues of access". I believe people are always engaged in an issue of access in one form or another. We are always trying to gain access - or to prevent access - to ourselves, others, environments, power, God, money, technology, etc. through a variety of media: language, social barriers, prejudice, technology, rules, laws, etc.

Themes of my work include compassion, stigma, prejudice, violence, and other social and environmental issues. I work in a variety of media to explore and express social, personal, and environmental themes.

I am particularly intrigued by the complex relationship that includes each person's body. The body acts as both a barrier and a connector between one's interior reality (feelings, thoughts, emotions) and his or her exterior reality (social, manmade, and natural environments).

Current Work
My current project is "Faces In the Crowd," a multi-faceted project begun with the creation of an interactive sculpture. A mirror is flanked by pop-up books which depict photographs of groups of individuals who have something in common: race, gender, age, body size, clothing, etc. Viewers are asked to look through photographic masks to see themselves in the mirror as a different person facing the different crowds of people in the pop-up books.

This project enables the viewer to "access" the experience of different individuals in different social situations. The individual viewer also gains access to his or her root beliefs, attitudes, and thinking patterns, in a unique and powerful way.
