Current Work "Burnt Oranges," a feature-length experimental documentary about the long-term effects and repercussions, personal and social, of the state terrorism in Argentina's in the 1970’s.
"Burnt Oranges" juxtaposes a poetic first person witness narration with interviews, documentary and re-created footage, to explore issues of memory, historical time, identity, love, loss and accountability. Shot in Argentina and in the U.S., the film is intended for national and international theatrical distribution and dvd/video and Internet broadcast. The approximate length is 90 minutes.
The film is of the genre that deals with place, identity, history and memory, but it also conveys a unique examination of a particular historical time that has not been fully represented in other films.
"Burnt Oranges" reveals current life in Buenos Aires, Argentina, through the eyes of a long-gone native, while it also records and uncovers compelling testimonies of resistance, transformation, and hope. |
Short Bio Silvia Malagrino is a Chicago-based artist, native of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her innovative interdisciplinary work in multiple media – including photography, installation, and digital video, - amalgamates critical thinking with poetry, and metaphor with documentation.
Malagrino has exhibited internationally and her work is included in the collections of the Museum of the Art Institute of Chicago, and La Bibliotheque National de Paris, France, among others. She is the recipient of numerous awards and prizes, including The CINE Golden Eagle Award for her first film Burnt Oranges- a feature length experimental documentary about the long-term effects and repercussions, personal and social, of Argentina's 1970’s state terrorism. In 2005, her digital video animation The Stream of Life received the prestigious Lorenzo De Medici First Prize Award in New Media at the 5th Edition of The Florence Biennale.
Malagrino is a Professor at the School of art and Design of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
