Funding Resources/Funding Lists
Center for Craft, Creativity and Design American Craft Research Projects This fund aims to increase the number of creative scholars and practitioners interested in pursuing craft studies and research and supports research that demonstrates the relevance of craft within contemporary culture. Project Research Grants are provided for research on American studio craft. Proposals are welcome from academic researchers, independent scholars, doctoral students, and museum curators. Graduate Research Grants are provided to graduate students working on a thesis or dissertation that relate to the goals of the Craft Research Fund. Grants: Project Research Grants of $10,000-$15,000; Graduate Research Grants of up to $5,000.
The George and Helen Segal Foundation Provides grants of $5,000 and $10,000 to painters and sculptors. Deadline is in October of each year.
Black
Rock Arts Foundation Grants to $3,000.
Biennial Grants for Mature Women Women artists, sculptors, or photographers who are at least 35 years of age are invited to submit three color prints of any medium (oil, watercolor, original works on paper, or sculpture) or three color or black-and-white prints of photographic works. Grants: $1,000. NOTE: Next grants awarded in 2007. Write for guidelines.
Creative Capital Grants to individual artists in the performing and visual arts, media, new fields. Disciplines rotate, so that grants are given to visual artists every other year. Grants: Up to $20,000
The Sam and Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts, Inc. Provides grants to individual painters and organizations that support the visual arts, in alternate years.
Artadia - The Fund for Art and Dialogue Unrestricted cash fellowships and a national network of support provided to visual artists in participating cities. Cities: 2007 - Boston, San Francisco; 2008 - Houston.
The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Inc. Giving exclusively to needy and worthy individual working artists (painters, sculptors, artists who work on paper, including printmakers) who have embarked on professional careers; grants may be used for professional or personal requirements. Grants: $5,000-$20,000
Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation
Individual support program for painters, sculptors, and printmakers who
have worked at least 20 years in a mature phase of their art, and are
in current financial need. Emergency assistance program for
painters, sculptors, and printmakers who have worked at least 10 years
in a mature phase of their art and are in current financial need which
is the result of a recent emergency occurrence such as a fire, flood or
medical emergency.
Money for Women/Barbara Deming Memorial Fund, Inc. Grants of up to $1,500 to poets, fiction and nonfiction writers, visual artists, and for a mixed-genre category (illustration and text) to feminist women in the arts. Application fee is $20. Two application deadlines each year: December 31 (art and fiction) and June 30 (nonfiction and poetry). Fund does not maintain email, phone, or website. To request application materials, write to he postal address and be sure to include a SASE.
The Puffin Foundation
Grants that encourage emerging artists whose works, due to their genre
and/or social philosophy might have difficulty being aired.
John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation
Fellowships for advanced professionalsî in the creative arts.
E.D. Foundation Grants to individual professional artists, sculptors, and printmakers. Grants: $2,500 to $5,000
Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Funds representational or figurative artists working in the early stages of their careers in painting, drawing, printmaking, or sculpture only. Applicants must have started or completed art school training or must demonstrate, through work and future plans, a commitment to making art a lifetime career. Funds may be used for any art-related purpose including study, travel, studio rental, purchase of materials, etc. NOTE: Images must be submitted on CD only; slides are no longer accepted. Grants: Up to $12,500 (Canadian $)
Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts EFA Studio Center: Provides subsidized artists' studios in New York City. Grants Program for Individuals in the Visual Arts: Grants to artists in all media except photography, video/film, and crafts. Note: Grants are not currently being given. Check the web site regularly for updates.
NFAA Fellowships in the Visual Arts Offers fellowships in the visual arts in six-month cycles, renewable for 2 years. Available to artists ages 18-40 practicing professionally for 1-5 years. Open to US citizens or permanent residents.
The Gunk Foundation Grants for public arts projects - intended to challenge the current market-dominated system of art production and to move art into the "public realm." NOTE: The grant program is temporarily suspended; no grants to be given in 2006 or 2007.
Virginia A. Groot Foundation
Grants
to artists who have exceptional talent and demonstrated ability in ceramic sculpture or sculpture. Artists may be at any stage of career development, or older at the time of the application deadline.
Xeric Foundation Grants to self-publishing Comic Book Creators
Aaron Siskind Foundation Individual Photographer's Fellowships of up to $5,000.
Nadine Blacklock Nature Photography Fellowship for Women One month-long artist fellowship for a woman nature photographer to allow her access to the subject matter found at the Sanctuary with a $2,000 stipend. Also funds Emerging Artist Fellowships for Minnesota artists.
En Foco, Inc. New Works Photography Awards to assist photographers in the creation or completion of quality in-depth photographic work that explores themes emanating from their personal experiences. Applicants must be of African, Asian, Latino, Native American, Pacific Islander, or Aleutian heritage. Work can be in any photo-based style or genre (documentary, autobiographical, landscape, abstract, digital, pinhole, alternative processes, etc).
Golden Light Awards An international competition for emerging photographers and professionals who have embarked on a personal project or have amassed a personal body of work. Entry is open to photographers everywhere.
FiftyCrows International Fund for Documentary Photography (Formerly Mother Jones Fund) The fund awards four grants of $5,000 each to "emerging documentary photographers whose outstanding ability in visual storytelling leads us to a better understanding of our common humanity."
W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund, Inc. Awards to encourage photojournalism.
Erna and Victor Hasselblads Foundation Research Grants in Photography promote scientific research, education and projects within the field of photography. Open internationally to photographers, cultural theorists, historians, curators and researchers. Grants: 50,000 - 500,000 Swedish kronors ($6,000 - $60,000).
The Ruth Chenven Foundation Grants of up to $1,500 to artists and craftspeople for current and new projects in the visual arts. Applications may be downloaded from the website and must be received by July 31; to receive an application by mail, request must be made prior to May 31. Women's Studio Workshop, Inc. Awards an Artists' Book Residency to assist artists working in Women's Studio Workshop studios to produce a limited edition book work. The grant includes a stipend of $2,000 to $3,000 for six to eight weeks, materials up to $500, access to all studios, travel costs (within the Continental US), and housing.
Library Fellows Artist Book Program The Library Fellows Program encourages and promotes the creation of quality book art. The program provides funds for the creation of new artists' books by book artists or artists of other media who are interested in creating a book. Up to $12,000 for one project per year. Deadline: January 31, annually.
Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation (LVF) provides one-time grants to individuals working in the fine arts (excluding photography, film, and video) and in the literary arts, including playwriting. Also supports certain unaffiliated scholarly and/or research projects. Grants ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 are awarded on the criteria of merit and need; the foundation is especially concerned with those who have no other source of funding.
