Emerging Artist Theatre - This 14-year-old theatre company dedicated to developing and producing new work seeks submissions for several of its programs:

Icicle Creek Theatre Festival (August 9-17, 2008, Leavenworth, Washington) – This 9-day playwrights workshop offers “honorariums, resort lodging and meals, travel expenses, skilled directors and dramaturges, excellent Equity actors; time, space, support, and artistic freedom in an extraordinarily beautiful natural setting in the Cascade Mountains; and a direct connection with a major Seattle regional theatre (A.C.T.). Midtown International Theatre Festival (July 13 – August 10, 2008, New York, NY) – Seeking productions and staged readings from New York State, New Jersey, or Connecticut for festival performance. Dylan Days One Act Playwright Contest (Hibbing, MN) – Seeking original, un-produced one-acts of any content and subject matter but reflecting what Bob Dylan came to be known for: an original voice who embraced a new direction, a unique vision with the power to move people. Winning playwright receives $100 and work is performed on Hibbing Community College stage during Dylan Days (Hibbing, MN, is Dylan’s hometown) as featured entertainment for annual Literary Showcase. Play will be cast with experienced actors and directed by Michael Ricci. Open to all playwrights. Plays may be of any genre except musicals or puppet theatre, should be 30-60 minutes long, with 3-6 characters. Settings should be fairly modest, avoiding extravagant set pieces or special effects. McLaren Memorial Comedy Play Writing Competition (Midland, TX) – Seeking full-length and one-act comedies for adults, teens, or children (musical comedies no longer accepted). Prizes: $400 for winning full-length, $200 for winning one-act, staged readings for finalists in each category; possible fully-staged season or special production for any finalist (if so, playwright’s lodging and transportation are provided for opening weekend). New York Musical Theatre Festival / Next Link Project (September 15 - October 5, 2008, New York, NY [tentative dates]) – “It’s not a revival, it’s a revolution.” NYMF strives to feature the most diverse array of work possible by musical theatre’s most exciting emerging writers. Seeking production-ready musicals for Next Link Project, for which 18 shows will be selected by jury of theatre luminaries and presented in repertory over 3-week festival in key venues in NYC theatre district. IMPORTANT: Playwright bears most production costs, though NYMF provides significant support; think of NYMF as co-producer. North American Actors Association (NAAA) Playreading Festival Competition (Summer 2008, London, UK) – Based in Great Britain, NAAA seeks new one-act and full-length plays dealing with North American culture for rehearsal and publicized public readings by professional North American actors. No screenplays. Plays should not have been previously produced or mounted in UK. Plays need not necessarily be set in North America, but should have primarily North American casts. **Estrogenius 2008 Short Play Showcase** – Seeking new short plays by female writers. Also will consider plays by male writers that explore complex female characters and perspectives and are appropriate for a celebration of female voices. Maximum length is 20 minutes, but preferred length is 10-15 minutes; should require only simple production values; minimum of 2 characters. Metropolitan Playhouse (June 2008, New York, NY) – Seeking short new plays inspired by life and history of New York’s Lower East Side. Submissions evaluated by Metropolitan’s artistic staff; up to 10 selected plays will be produced as part of Metropolitan’s 5th Annual East Village Chronicles festival. Plays must relate to a particular place (bar, park, street corner, shop, residence) that has been of particular importance in the neighborhood. Iraqimemorial.org – An online call to action to artists, designers, architects, or other interested creative individuals or collaborators to propose concepts for the creation of memorials to the many thousands of Iraqi civilians killed in the war in Iraq. Concepts will be featured in a growing online exhibition/database on the site, where proposals may be viewed and rated by the public as well as by an internationally diverse group of individual scholars and curators serving as judges. Darknight Theatrical Productions / Darknight Gallery (Summer 2008, Chicago, IL) - Seeking new scripts (not previously produced) that tell dark and disturbing tales of evil with thought-provoking themes (a la Rod Serling’s “Night Gallery” and “The Twilight Zone”). No slasher scripts. First Nations Development Institute’s Native Youth and Culture Fund – Grants of $5,000-$20,000 for projects that focus on Native youth and incorporate culture and tradition to address social issues (e.g. drug and alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy, mental health). Eligible applicants are Tribal programs or Native nonprofits in or near Indian Country, including Hawaii and Alaska. Eligible projects include those that preserve, strengthen, or renew cultural and/or spiritual practices, beliefs, and values; and those that increase access to and sharing of cultural customs and beliefs through the use of appropriate technologies (traditional and/or modern), as a means of reviving or preserving tribal language, arts, history, or other culturally relevant topic. PennPAT Fee-Support and New Directions Grants – Administered by the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour (PennPAT) is a public/private partnership that works to increase opportunities for professional PA-based performing artists to obtain successful touring engagements. Two programs currently accepting applications:
- Fee-Support Grants provide funding to Mid-Atlantic region-based nonprofit presenters in support of touring engagements with artists approved for the PennPAT Artist Roster; projects must include one or more public performances, and residency activities are strongly encouraged. Grants fund up to 50% of the artist’s fees and travel expenses; in rare instances PennPAT may also fund 50% of extraordinary technical production costs needed for the engagement.
- New Directions Grants to Mid-Atlantic region-based nonprofit presenters support more complex projects that involve long-term residency with a PennPAT roster artist; projects should develop relationships among artists, presenters, and community members through collaborative activities while presenting at least one public performance. Grants fund up to 50% of total project costs.

Joyce Foundation Awards - Grants of $50,000 enabling Midwest cultural institutions to serve and represent Chicago’s diverse populations and fostering the development of new artistic works, including in theatre, by artists of color. Artist Trust Grants for Artist Projects (GAP) Program - For Washington State artists, all disciplines. GAP provides up to $1,500 to individual artists to develop new ideas and directions for specific projects, e.g., the development, completion, or presentation of new work; publication; travel for artistic research or to present or complete work; documentation of work; professional development. VSA arts Apprenticeship at Williamstown Theatre Festival (Summer 2008, Williamstown, MA) – Providing unique insight into world of professional theatre for students with a disability, ages 19-24. Every summer, Williamstown Theatre Festival Apprentice Program offers promising students classes in acting, voice, and movement, as well as discussions and master classes with notable professionals. Apprentices also learn about different aspects of running a professional theater company by working in each of various departments at Festival on rotating basis. Many former apprentices have gone on to successful careers in professional theater. VSA arts Apprentices will have all expenses covered by VSA arts, including application fee; tuition, room, and board; round trip coach airfare to and from Williamstown, MA, including ground transportation; travel, room, and board for a personal care assistant, if required; reasonable accommodation for Apprentice’s disability. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must attend full term. No audition required. Creative Capital Grants – Providing significant and comprehensive multi-level support for the promotion of works-in-progress and works-to-be. Projects receive both first-year and follow-up support and can garner up to $76,000 in direct monies and services. Creative Work Fund – Providing grants of $10,000-$40,000 in support of new work by San Francisco Bay Area literary and performing artists (including playwrights) collaborating with nonprofit organizations. **Kentucky Foundation for Women’s Artist Enrichment Program** – Supporting feminist artists and nonprofit organizations in the development and implementation of art activities directly focused on progressive social change in Kentucky. Princess Grace Foundation-USA Theater and Playwriting Awards –
- Theater Awards program includes: SCHOLARSHIPS– for tuition assistance for students entering final year of study at accredited nonprofit U.S. school; APPRENTICESHIPS– for salary assistance at nonprofit theater company for individual artist “learning the trade” under mentorship of skilled staff person; and FELLOWSHIPS – for salary assistance at nonprofit theater company for individual artist with substantial relationship with nominating company. Kennedy Center Arts Management Fellowships – This 9-month long, full-time fellowship program in Washington, DC, provides highly motivated, disciplined, and creative performing artists and arts managers with the instruction and experience they need to succeed in today’s complex arts environment. The Children’s Theatre Foundation of America / Aurand Harris Children’s Theatre Grants and Fellowships – Awards of up to $5,000.
