MadLab Theatre (Columbus, OH) – Seeking full-length plays for regular 2008 theatre season and beyond (not for Theatre Roulette). MadLab promotes the creation of provocative new works and strives to deliver diverse and original theatre to the community – it’s been called a “Generation X-troupe with ambition and taboo-shattering imagination.” Ideally scripts should be long one-acts (70-90 minutes) or two-act plays (100-120 minutes). GI60 / “Gone in 60 Secs” (May/June 2007, Brooklyn, NY) – Screaming Media Productions in association with Harrogate Theatre of Harrogate College and Brooklyn College New York present “the world’s only interactive international theatre festival,” featuring plays 60 seconds or less in length. Harrogate Theatre and Brooklyn College will each premiere 50 new plays, which will be recorded and made available for viewing or download via the Screaming Media website for one year. John Gassner Memorial Playwriting Award / The New England Theatre Conference – Open to all playwrights. Seeking full-length plays, unpublished, un-produced, and not under option; no musicals. Summer Shorts 2 Festival (late June, 2007, Williston, North Dakota) – Youth Education on Stage seeks 10-15 minute plays to be performed by youth (ages 6-18) for audiences of all ages. This year’s theme: “School’s Out,” i.e., plays set in a school room, school yard, principal’s office, lunch room, etc. Any subject, but remember that this is the heartland and keep it clean. Darknight Theatrical Productions / Darknight Gallery (Chicago, IL) - Seeking scripts that tell dark and disturbing tales of evil with thought-provoking themes (a la Rod Serling’s “Night Gallery” and “The Twilight Zone”). Must have good dialogue that gets to the point and tells a complete story in 45 minutes or less (max 30 pp.), strong characters, socially conscious themes, and dramatic tension that intertwines with suspense; must be able to be produced in modest theatre with modest budget. Riant Theatre / Strawberry One-Act Festival (Summer 2007, New York, NY) – For plays 30 minutes max, with own director and cast and ready to be presented in August; one in-theatre tech rehearsal provided. The Francis Paul Lyons/ Almas Paul Screenwriting & Playwriting Award – In this new competition administered by the Armenian Dramatic Arts Alliance (ADAA), $10,000 will be awarded for a new play or screenplay based on Armenian themes. ID America Festival (November 16-21, 2007, New York, NY) – A festival that questions, explores, challenges, and celebrates what it means to be living in America today; inspired by Quo Vadimus Arts’ growing concern over the polarization of media in America. Playwrights of all ages, all levels of experience, native-born or foreign-born, and of whatever political or religious affiliation, are welcome to submit a piece reflecting the author’s view of America. **Leeway Foundation Transformation Awards** – Women and trans artists in NJ/PA’s Delaware Valley working in any medium may apply for unrestricted award of up to $15,000. Eligible applicants must create art for social change that impacts a larger group, audience, or community; must have been creating such art for the past 5 years or more, demonstrating a long-term commitment to social-change work; must have financial need and limited or no access to other financial resources; must be 18+ years old; and must have lived for the past 2 or more years in the Delaware Valley region. The Big Read – In this initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, nonprofit organizations (including literary centers, museums, art centers, arts councils, humanities councils, literary festivals, arts organizations, and others) may apply for matching grant of $5,000-$20,000 to help fund a community reading event. During The Big Read, citizens read and discuss a single book within their communities; program lasts approximately one month and includes both major events devoted specifically to the book but also events that use the book as a point of departure, e.g., film screenings or theatrical readings. Association of Performing Arts Presenters Ensemble Theatre Travel Grants – Providing travel subsidy grants of up to $2,000 to theatre artistic directors, producers, presenters, managers, and artists to see work by ensemble theatres that have initiated a dialogue with them about a long-term partnership or project. In addition, artistic, production, education, publicity, or marketing staff at ensemble theatre companies are eligible for funds to visit a potential host theatre or arts presenter in order to effectively prepare for an engagement at least 6-12 months in advance. The Theatre Communications Group (TCG) International Theatre Institute Travel Grants - Supporting cultural exchange and artistic partnerships between theatre professionals in U.S. and counterparts in Russia and Eastern and Central Europe. TCG’s American Theatre National Theatre Criticism/Affiliated Writers Program – Opportunity for New York City and Minnesota residents only. P73 Playwriting Fellowship (Brooklyn, NY) – Providing year-long comprehensive support to one early-career playwright who has received neither wide public recognition nor substantial production opportunities in New York City. Fellow receives cash stipend of $2,000 plus additional $8,000 to cover expenses for research, workshop, and reading presentations. Fellowship year, which runs from January 1, 2008, to December 31, 2008, includes at least one public presentation of a new play, and fellow is expected to be present in NYC from time to time to fully engage in opportunities fellowship provides. Dana Foundation Arts Education Rural Initiative – Arts education organizations may apply for a 1- or 2-year grant to support professional development projects leading to improved teaching of the performing arts in public schools in U.S. rural communities. Projects should be aimed at professional artists teaching performing arts in the public schools and in-school art specialists who are permanent school staff and teach performing arts as primary area of instruction. Jewish Women’s Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago Grants – Grants averaging $5,000-$20,000 for projects and programs targeted at improving the lives of Jewish women and girls, particularly but not exclusively in Chicago area. Joyce Foundation Awards – Grants of $50,000 to enable Midwest cultural institutions to support creation and production of new work by artists of color. Projects should include substantive community engagement efforts. Eligible: well-established cultural organizations whose primary mission is presentation of art through public programs serving diverse audiences; must be located in Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, or St. Paul/ Minneapolis.
