S.U.R.G.E. – Social Uprising Resistance and Grassroots Encouragement Film Festival (March 11-13, 2011, Austin, TX) – Aims to promote progressive activism by showcasing films from around the world made by activists. Submitted films must be directly, indirectly, literally, or symbolically related to love and/or activism and/or protest and/or civil disobedience. MoxieDocs Co-Production Award - A production sponsorship program to support documentary film as a turning point of art and activism, journalism and history. Award provides funding and resources for complete production, post-production, and theatrical distribution to the selected documentary proposal. FEE: $25. Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) Greenhouse Fund – Grants for industry training and professional development projects for public TV professionals and independent producers. Eligible projects may involve forums for new technologies, skill-building, showcasing of best practices, mentoring, training that increases mastery, strategies to improve competitiveness, conferences to bring new voices and points of view into the public TV system, or forums to address key issues in public broadcasting. Experimental Television Center / Presentation Funds – Offers partial support ($1,000 annual funding cap) to not-for-profit organizations in New York State for in-person presentations of electronic media and film by independent artists. Supports fees to presenting artists but not the rentals of works or equipment or any other expenses. Publicly supported educational institutions, public schools, and New York State agencies or departments not eligible. Individual artists cannot apply directly but are encouraged to inform exhibition venues of this funding resource. NYC Downtown Film Festival (New York, NY) – A project of DMAC (Duo Multicultural Arts Center), aims to create, promote, and celebrate multicultural arts through ongoing film screenings. KQED Truly California Shorts – Web-only companion series to the PBS Truly California feature-length documentary series. Seeking short documentaries (30 minutes or shorter) about California, shot in California, and made by California filmmakers. Films may be in a wide range of styles on a wide range of topics. 2009 Calls for Film and Video Submissions
NewFilmmakers – Screening series for distributors every week at Anthology Film Archives in New York City and every month at the Sunset Gower Studio in Los Angeles. Also puts on quarterly 5-day festivals with selected works from the screening series. Applicants may submit their work for Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter, but films may be held over for the next season. They have also started an online screening series that allows filmmakers to make their films available for paid download through the NewFilmmakers website; see website for more details. Tight Shortz: Short Film, Music and Art Festival (March 1-December 31, 2010, Los Angeles, CA) – Seeks to encourage creativity and spread positivity through a traveling, monthly short film festival. Seeks to provide a platform for up-and-coming filmmakers, performers, and artists to showcase their talents and display their work. **Chick Flicks Film Series** (Screening Series, Dallas, TX) – Put on by Women In Film Dallas, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering, promoting, and mentoring its membership in film, TV, and new media. Proceeds from the screenings benefit the foundation, which awards a scholarship and project completion grant to Texas women every year. Films directed or produced by a Texas woman are eligible for entry and the coveted “Audience Choice,” “Jury Choice," and “Crew Girls” awards. The Flickering Light (Monthly Screening Series, Philadelphia, PA) - Seeking films of all lengths in any genre by independent filmmakers. Los Angeles Comedy Festival: Screening Series (Monthly, Los Angeles, CA) - Year-round monthly screening series with the goal of discovering great comedic talent and promoting it to both the entertainment industry and the L.A. public. Each screening will have a judges' and an audience choice winner. The winners will be screened at the Los Angeles Comedy Festival. Seeking entries in the following categories: Short (under 10 minutes), Extended, Short (10-30 minutes), TV Pilot (5-22 minutes), and Webisode (1-5 minutes). NYC Downtown Short Film Festival (April 28-May 4, 2009, New York, NY) - A program of DUO Multi Cultural Arts Center, whose mission is to create, promote, and celebrate multi-cultural arts through theatre, dance, and film. The festival takes place the same week as the Tribeca Film Festival. Submissions, received on a rolling basis, will be screened for technical proficiency, then screened monthly in front of an audience. Screening staff and audiences rate films; the highest rated films from each screening are invited to participate in the festival. **CineWomen NY's Show and Grow Program** (New York, NY) - For rough-cut or close-to-finished films on which at least one key position is filled by a CineWomen NY member. The unfinished or "needs-work" films screen to an appreciative, supportive, educated audience of fellow CineWomen NY members; audience completes your written survey and gives you verbal feedback on your work. **Women's Independent Cinema** - Distributing quality independent films created by women filmmakers from around the world. Seeking completed features, documentaries, and shorts. A woman filmmaker must be involved in one of the following roles: director, producer, writer, editor, director of photography, or music director. Selected films will be incorporated onto a monthly disc to be mailed to subscribers; the number of films on each disc varies. Filmmakers receive payment for the one-month, non-exclusive rights to your movie. Following distribution on the monthly disc, your film joins the Women's Independent Cinema E-store, where it remains for sale for the remainder of the term of your contract. NO FEE. Sarita L. WILDsound FEEDBACK Film and Screenplay Festival (monthly, Toronto, ON, Canada) - Monthly film screenings followed by a discussion with the audience and an industry moderator. Each film submitted will receive full feedback from industry directors and producers, even if not selected for festival. After the festival, films are showcased on their website and you get paid for every viewing of your film online. The goal is for films to be sold to attending distributors right after festival screening. Winning screenplays are read aloud by professional actors at a screenplay event; the top one-page screenplay will be made into a film (see website for details). Moviemiento - "Send your movie on the road." Moviemiento is organizing special short film screenings in different locations throughout Europe on a regular basis, in addition to official European-wide tours. Specific dates for planned screenings will be announced on Moviemiento website. [PAM] (Perpetual Art Machine) - "A hybrid transgender generator of the reincarnation of the curator, the artist, and the patron," [PAM] is an online, ongoing, interactive web portal that provides tools to post and discuss video art, breaking down barriers and blurring boundaries between artists, curators, and viewers. Video artists may upload footage and tag it using keywords. Uploaded art is immediately available for viewing online. In addition, [PAM] integrates high-resolution video art files into an advanced computer system that allows for the display of up to 16 works of video art simultaneously. Viewers may enter a keyword and view multiple works by different artists tagged with that keyword simultaneously on the same screen; they can then choose to see any of the works full-screen. When there is no interaction, [PAM] auto-curates. [PAM] also has an interactive installation podium/kiosk that has been exhibited at Art Basel, 5 Scope Art Fairs, and numerous other film and art festivals. **International Museum of Women 'Exhibiting You' Online Showcase** (January-September, 2009) - I.M.O.W.'s online community is seeking art, creative writing, journalism, music, audio, photography, video, and animation work that relates to its mission to value the lives of women around the world. Selected works will be posted twice a month on the I.M.O.W. website and be highlighted in e-mails to subscribers. Seeking work in a wide variety of media genres, and styles that deals with women's experiences. Fans of Film Green Film Festival (February 1-28, 2010, online) - Seeking films that bring awareness to social and environmental issues around the world. Accepted films will be encoded for HD stream for online viewing and judging. Accepted films will be viewed and judged online by a limited number of invites and paid public viewing requests only. All net profits from sales for public viewing and judging will be split between the filmmaker (70%) and Fans of Film (30%). Judging will take place during February 2010; four films will win, one in each category and genre. Winning films will screen on "Fans of Film" in HD stream for the entire following year, with continued 70/30 profit sharing, as well as a lifetime non-exclusive distribution deal with Fans of Film. Seeking Short (10-20 minutes) and Feature (60-120 minutes) documentaries and experimental films that fall into either the "environmental" or "social issues" category. Midwest Independent Film Festival (monthly, Chicago, IL) - Dedicated to showing fine independent films by Midwest filmmakers. Includes opportunities for directors and actors to meet audiences and hold discussions after screenings. Showcasing emerging directors and powerful artistic visions is a large part of their mission. Seeking films by Midwest filmmakers, preferably produced in the Midwest (though they will consider films produced by Midwest filmmakers outside the Midwest and films produced by non-Midwest filmmakers within the Midwest). They define the Midwest as the eight-state region of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin. Lumen Eclipse (Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA) - Lumen Eclipse presents contemporary motion art in public spaces, using outdoor video displays, social venues, and the web, with the goal of broadening society's awareness of contemporary art. Currently seeking proposals for site-specific works by individual artists to screen on public video displays in Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA.
