Youth Producing Change – A new opportunity from the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival and Adobe Youth Voices. Program seeks film, video, and animated works made by youth (ages 19 and younger) that focus on human rights and social issues. Selected films will travel to Human Rights Watch’s film festivals in New York (June 2008), Boston (Fall 2008), London (March 2009), and San Francisco (Spring 2009) and be included in the 2009 Traveling Film Festival. Films will also be added to the Adobe Youth Voices and HRW websites and to the teacher’s lending library for the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival High School Program. Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival (May 22-25, 2008, Honolulu, HI) – “We are one of the oldest Gay and Lesbian Film Festivals in the world and proud to be here in the middle of our island paradise representing and promoting GLBTIQ culture, arts, and lifestyle in Hawaii.” All genres. Political Fashion Films (Spring 2008, London, UK) – Photographer Nick Knight has conceived a multi-level project that encourages creatives to use the medium of fashion to convey their political beliefs, agendas, and thoughts. Already launched, the first stage of “Political Fashion Films” invites you to submit film of 30 seconds - 3 minutes that articulates some kind of political point - be it an ideological platitude or a petty grudge - using fashion. NY Asian American International Film Festival (July 10-19, 2008, New York, NY) – This 31st annual festival seeks feature, short, narrative, documentary, animation, experimental, and youth films, with additional categories for screenplays, works-in-progress, and youth-to-youth films. Eligible works will have been produced, written, or directed by media makers of Asian descent from any nationality or are about the Asian community; must have been completed after January 1, 2007. Bicycle Film Festival – A celebration of bicycles through film, art, and music. Featuring dozens of films on variety of bicycle styles - BMX to urban bike culture, cycling to commuting. Festival will tour international cities – in 2007, over 100,000 people attended the festival in 15 cities. All lengths (short is great, easier to program). **The Baltimore Women’s Film Festival** (Baltimore, MD, October 16-20, 2008) – Seeking feature, short, short-short (5 minutes max.), animated, documentary, and experimental films, as well as music videos, by women or of interest to women. Eligible films must fit into one of these criteria: 1) Movie was directed, written, shot, animated, produced, or edited by a woman; 2) Movie features strong performance by female actress or actresses; 3) Movie is based on topic highly relevant to women. NOTE: Movies may be directed and/or written by men provided they fit into category 2 or 3. **The Broad Humor Film Festival and Screenplay Competition** (June 12-15, 2008, Venice, CA) – This festival of funny films that are both written and directed by women aims to entertain audiences with the breadth of comedic vision, the heights of antic hilarity, and the depths of ironic satire present in the voices and visions of women filmmakers today. Director and writer need not be same woman. Eligible: short- and feature-length comedic films and screenplays. Freewaves 10th Celebration of Experimental Media Arts (October 2008) – Looking for interesting works that represent an alternative to mainstream media or directly relate to “Hollywood.” Showcasing experimental media art from around the world at art venues in Los Angeles in November 2006 and through the Freewaves website. Media artworks include experimental videos and films (narrative, documentary, art, animation, etc.), cell phone videos, DVDs, websites, simple installations, wifi events and silent video billboards. 2008 DC Shorts Film Festival & Screenplay Competition (September 11-18, 2008, Washington, DC) –Accepting films in all genres, styles, and themes, both standard definition and high definition, from around the world. NOTE: Female Director Award consists of custom-made trophy and $250. Films must have been completed after January 1, 2005. For Screenwriting Competition, 5-7 finalists are selected by judges to be featured during festival weekend, which screenwriters are invited to attend, and cast live reading of script from bank of actors and directors; live readings then performed in front of audience whose votes, along with judges’ scores, determine winner. Winning script receives $1,000 up front, plus $1,000 upon completion, with final film guaranteed entry into DC Shorts 2009. Scripts must be 15 pp. or less. Darklight 2008 (Dublin, IRELAND) - Explores the convergence of art, film, and technology and focuses on work that challenges concepts, visual aesthetic, narrative, access, methods of production, and dialogue, through contemporary filmmaking techniques. Iraqimemorial.org – An online call to action to artists, designers, architects, or other interested creative individuals or collaborators to propose concepts for the creation of memorials to the many thousands of Iraqi civilians killed in the war in Iraq. Concepts will be featured in a growing online exhibition/database on the site, where proposals may be viewed and rated by the public as well as by an internationally diverse group of individual scholars and curators serving as judges. **Rockaway Artists Alliance “Of Women” Exhibition** (April 19 – May 20, 2008, Fort Tildens, Queens, NY) – Open to all media without limitation (including video/film), this exhibition seeks to bring the viewer into the unique world of women in all their aspects, intonations, and hues. Subjects should include images of women and may highlight mother and child (show will run over Mother’s Day). Eligible: Women artists who are RAA members or who have previously exhibited with RAA (membership is $25 annually). G. Franklin Fish ASL Film Festival (April 13, 2008, Boston, MA) – Seeking feature-length, short, documentary, animation, and children’s film with over 50% of the dialogue in Sign Language and including ASL performers. Hosted by NIEVA (National Institute for Education through Visual Arts), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and showcasing of American Sign Language, the festival will be held at Northeastern University. ARTIADE 2008 / Olympics of Art – Opportunity for your work to become an “Ambassador of Art” for your country for the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing and Los Angeles. ARTIADE is a 4th annual cultural event being held under the aegis of the Hellenic Republic (Greece) and inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, where athletes and artists, representing 2 different aspects of a common culture, were considered of equal merit. The Hub at http://hub.witness.org is the newest initiative of Witness (www.witness.org), a human rights organization that uses video and online technologies to open the eyes of the world to human rights violations. Through the Hub, anyone can upload something they have filmed or recorded and provide with it information and resources for viewers to learn more and to take action, or can simply watch video that has been given sufficient context and background to enable you to understand what is happening.
