Our Open Letter to Hollywood
The Fund for Women Artists launched the Push the Envelope, Please! campaign to demonstrate to the movie industry that the public wants more films written and directed by women.
As the first step, we gathered signatures on the Open Letter below in response to the 2005 Oscars. We are no longer gathering signatures, but we wanted to share the letter with you.
Dear Hollywood,
You are America's dream factory, but you are neglecting the dreams of women and girls. You are hiring men to write and direct 90% of your major films at a time when the public needs to hear more than just the male half of every story.
We want more films by women, and we urge you to use your immense creative and financial resources to hire more women writers and directors and to make more films that reflect the diversity and complexity of women's lives. Our whole society will be enriched when women's perspectives are fully represented.
It's time to put women in the picture and
Push the Envelope, Please!
Thank you.
